What Is a Pure Sequence in Indian Rummy?
A Pure Sequence (Shuddh Sequence) in 13-card Indian Rummy consists of three or more consecutive cards of the exact same suit formed without any wildcard or joker substitution. Completing at least one pure sequence is mandatory for a valid declaration.
Valid vs. Invalid Pure Sequences
- Valid Pure: 5♠ - 6♠ - 7♠ (Three natural consecutive Spades).
- Valid Pure: 10♥ - J♥ - Q♥ - K♥ (Four natural consecutive Hearts).
- Valid Pure (Low Ace): A♦ - 2♦ - 3♦ (Ace acting as lowest consecutive card).
- Invalid Impure: 5♠ - [Wild Joker] - 7♠ (A joker substitution makes this sequence impure).
The 80-Point Penalty Rule
If you declare your hand with sets and impure runs but lack at least one pure sequence, your declaration is deemed completely invalid. You receive the maximum allowable penalty of 80 penalty points, regardless of how strong your other melds appear.
